Van Driver Sentenced After Fatal A421 Crash
Luke Flanagan, 28, slammed into a Peugeot 2008 on the A421 near Renhold just before 8am on 1 November 2021. The Peugeot had slowed and stopped in stationary traffic – but Flanagan failed to spot it.
The impact shoved the Peugeot underneath a stationary HGV ahead, causing it to burst into flames.
Tragic Deaths After Shocking Smash
Flanagan pleaded guilty to two counts of causing death by dangerous driving. Today, he was jailed for five years and seven months at Crown Court.
He’s also banned from the roads for four years and nine months and must pass an extended driving test before returning behind the wheel.
Family’s Heartbreaking Tribute
A family member’s victim impact statement laid bare the grief:
“My sister Emma and her daughter Khiana were inseparable as a pair. Emma was my older sister whom I grew up with. Whenever we spoke, it was like time didn’t exist. It’s so hard not to see or speak to her again.”
“They were just on their way to school, stuck in traffic like any other day. Their lives ended so needlessly, and I will never come to terms with that.”
“I understand Flanagan tried to rescue them and even got burned himself, but that can’t undo the impact on my family. I hope he can find some way to live with what he’s done.”
Police Warn Drivers: Stay Alert or Face Tragedy
Detective Sergeant Ben Heath from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Serious Collision Investigation Unit said:
“My thoughts are with Emma and Khiana’s family. This was a heartbreaking tragedy that could have been avoided if Flanagan had paid attention.”
“Drivers must stay alert, especially at high speeds. You’re controlling a powerful vehicle — failing to notice what’s ahead can have fatal consequences.”
