Man Pleads Guilty After Fatal Ilford Hit-and-Run
A 41-year-old man has admitted causing death by dangerous driving following a deadly crash in Ilford.
Speeding in 30mph Zone
Justin Clarke-Samuel, from Woodford Green, pleaded guilty at the Old Bailey on Monday, 8 December, the Metropolitan Police confirmed.
He also admitted a separate count of dangerous driving earlier that same day in Camden, Islington, and Hackney—before the fatal crash.
Police say Clarke-Samuel was speeding at over 60mph in a 30mph zone when he struck 20-year-old Yubin Tamang on Redbridge Lane East, Ilford, shortly before midnight on Saturday, 18 October.
Mr Tamang was attempting to cross the road when he was hit. He was rushed to hospital but tragically died two days later.
Shocking Details Unveiled
Detective Inspector Mark Braithwaite said: “Our thoughts and sympathies remain with Yubin’s family. While nothing can undo their loss, today’s two guilty pleas mark a step toward justice.”
He added: “Split-second decisions behind the wheel can have devastating, life-changing consequences. Too often, we support families who have lost loved ones because drivers ignored speed limits and drink laws.”
Car Found Hours Later, Suspect Arrested
Officers tracked the vehicle through CCTV and the car’s registration, revealing Clarke-Samuel as the owner and insured driver.
At 3am on Sunday, 19 October, police found the damaged BMW near Clarke-Samuel’s home. The car’s front end was battered with a smashed windscreen, bonnet scrapes, and a missing wing mirror cover.
Clarke-Samuel was arrested at his home that same day on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, failing to stop, and driving under the influence of drink or drugs.
He was initially charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving while the victim was still alive. After Mr Tamang’s death, the charge was upgraded to causing death by dangerous driving. Two more dangerous driving charges were added on 24 November, and on 4 December, he was hit with a charge of causing death by careless driving while over the alcohol limit.
What’s Next?
Clarke-Samuel is set to be sentenced on Thursday, 12 February.
He has yet to enter pleas on charges related to causing death by careless driving while over the limit, and another count of dangerous driving in Redbridge after the incident.
