A dramatic rescue mission is underway after several swimmers went missing in freezing, savage seas off Withernsea, East Riding of Yorkshire.
Emergency Crews Face “Horrendous” Waves
The alarm was raised just after 3pm when swimmers were spotted struggling in icy waters near the popular seaside town. Lifeboats, a plane, and a helicopter are combing the rough seas as RNLI crews, Humberside Police, Ambulance Service, and Fire and Rescue teams rush to the scene.
Hornsea Inshore Rescue called the sea conditions “horrendous.” Lifeboats have struggled to launch amid towering three-metre waves smashing the slipway, making the rescue operation perilous.
“Called out, unable to launch lifeboat due to horrendous conditions… three metre waves breaking on our slipway which would knock the tractor and trailer sideways off the ramp,” confirmed the rescue service.
Bitter Arctic Chill Adds to Chaos
Eyewitness Darrin Stevens described the scene as “bitter” and “freezing.” The brutal Arctic chill gripping the UK has pushed temperatures below zero, with strong winds punishing the coastline.
“It’s just blue lights, wall-to-wall from one side to the other. It’s not a good place to be in the sea,” Stevens told the BBC.
Coastguard teams have launched a full-scale search involving helicopters, fixed-wing aircraft, and lifeboats from Withernsea, Hornsea, and Bridlington. Mountain rescue units and air ambulance services are also on standby, battling against the elements.
Authorities Warn Public to Keep Away
Humberside Fire and Rescue have urged residents and visitors to steer clear of Withernsea’s central promenade, warning emergency vehicles will be moving rapidly in the area.
“There are emergency vehicles around the central promenade area of Withernsea. We ask if people can avoid this area if at all possible and to take care because emergency vehicles will be moving in the area,” a spokesperson said.
Meanwhile, the nearby Alexandra Hotel is stepping up, offering free shelter and drinks to first responders battling deadly conditions at sea.
Arctic Freeze Sparks Hazardous Sea Rescue
This rescue unfolds amid a harsh Arctic freeze gripping the UK, with the Met Office issuing amber and yellow weather warnings. Plummeting temperatures, frost, ice, and the threat of snow showers have made exposed coastlines deadly.
The brutal weather has made today’s rescue one of the most dangerous and challenging recent operations off the British coastline.
