A Brazilian woman has been locked up for three years after using her cleaning firm as a front to smuggle Brazilians into the UK. Ana Lucia Martins, 50, lured victims with promises of £400 a week only to force them into grueling 12-hour shifts with no breaks.
Convicted at the Old Bailey
Martins was found guilty under the Immigration Act 1971 after a December jury trial. She denied charges of assisting unlawful immigration but was sentenced at the Old Bailey on February 13.
The Home Office confirmed she will be automatically considered for deportation following her conviction.

“Martins sold her victims a dream of a prosperous life in the UK – instead, they suffered abuse and exploitation,” said Alex Norris, Minister for Border Security and Asylum.
He added, “This case is a prime example of the lies people smugglers sell to illegal migrants. That’s why we’re restoring order and control to our border, cracking down on incentives that tempt illegal migrants, and toughening enforcement to bring offenders like Martins to justice.”
Martins’ case sheds light on modern slavery operating under the guise of legitimate business, exposing the dark reality behind some migration routes.
