Tragic Crash at LaGuardia: Air Canada Express Jet Hits Fire Truck

Firetruck Missing Key Alert Device – Controller Might Be Off the Hook

Investigators probing the horrifying LaGuardia Airport crash are eyeing a major twist. The Port Authority firetruck that smashed into an Air Canada jet may not have had a working transponder. That crucial tech failure could explain why air traffic controllers missed red flags – potentially clearing them of full blame.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) revealed the Airport Surface Detection Equipment Model X (ASDE-X) system, designed to track planes and vehicles on runways, had died. It failed to sound alarms during Sunday night’s fatal collision.

“The controllers should have all the tools they need to do their job. Whether it’s aircraft or vehicles moving in the taxiways, they should have it all,” said NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy.

Passengers Forced to Taxi Past Wreckage Amid Investigation

As LaGuardia reels from the disaster, passengers are nervously taxiing right beside the mangled wreckage still littering the runway. The crash scene won’t clear until the NTSB finishes its painstaking investigation.

LaGuardia is one of 35 US airports equipped with advanced surface surveillance systems meant to prevent such runway disasters. Controllers rely on these systems to track every plane and vehicle. But this time, the firetruck’s missing transponder could’ve blinded the technology and the controllers.

Controller’s Role Under New Scrutiny

This development suggests the air traffic controller who authorised the firetruck to cross the runway may share less blame than first thought.

“We rarely, if ever, investigate a major accident where it was one failure,” Homendy told The Wall Street Journal. “Our aviation system is incredibly safe because there are multiple layers of defense… So when something goes wrong, many things went wrong.”

More questions loom about the midnight shift controllers’ fatigue and whether multitasking during a late-night emergency played a part. Curiously, the controller stayed on duty for minutes after the crash instead of being immediately relieved.

Pilots Have Long Warned of LaGuardia’s Issues

This deadly collision isn’t LaGuardia’s first brush with trouble. Pilots have flagged repeated close calls, miscommunications, and staffing woes over recent years despite advanced tech upgrades.

  • October 2024: Two Delta jets collided on the taxiway, injuring one and snapping a wing.
  • December 2024: A near-miss involving confusing air traffic control instructions almost led to disaster.
  • July 2023: Pilot reported a narrow escape after controllers nearly cleared two planes onto the same runway simultaneously.

Sunday’s crash occurred while the firetruck, cleared to cross the runway to investigate a United Airlines plane with onboard issues, collided with the Air Canada jet carrying 72 passengers and 4 crew. Both pilots died, and numerous passengers were injured.

What’s Next?

NTSB is still sifting through debris, analysing flight data recorders, and interviewing firefighters involved. The Port Authority won’t comment on the firetruck’s transponder status due to ongoing investigations.

Meanwhile, passengers face lengthy delays and unsettling views of the wreckage as LaGuardia works to reopen fully. The deadly crash comes amid a partial government shutdown, adding chaos to US airport operations already under strain from chronic air traffic controller shortages.
