Parakeet Becomes Ocean Explorer in Mini Sub
Steven Lawyer, an American engineering whiz, has turned his green parrot Bebe, into an underwater adventurer. The six-inch custom-built submarine carried the bird beneath the Bahamas coral reefs for a 15-minute splashdown complete with its own oxygen supply. Yes, a parakeet submarine! Housed inside a repurposed food container with air valves linked to a paintball oxygen cylinder, Bebe happily bobbed alongside tropical fish and vivid coral. The tiny vessel even had a safety alarm, though it’s unclear if Bebe knew how to use it.
Viral Sensation or Risky Stunt?
The videos of Bebe nodding calmly while taking in marine life have gone viral online. One viewer gushed, “He’s having the time of his life,” while another joked, “His friends are not gonna believe him.” Mr Lawyer insists Bebe entered the sub voluntarily and showed no signs of stress during the dive, which was carefully tested in a bathtub before the real ocean plunge. But not everyone is clapping. Critics slammed the stunt as reckless, with one commenting, “He has no business down there,” pointing out the ocean is the “literal exact opposite” of a parakeet’s natural habitat.
From Skydiving Bubble to Bike Tours: Bebe’s Wild Rides
This aquatic escapade isn’t Bebe’s first thrill. The parakeet has previously soared through the skies strapped inside a bubble on a parachute jump. According to Mr Lawyer, Bebe “voluntarily hopped” into the transparent sphere, enjoying the ride. He’s also become “a celebrity of sorts” after tagging along on week-long family bicycle trips. This daring duo’s unique bond and Mr Lawyer’s clever engineering have grabbed internet eyeballs across the globe.
Animal Welfare Debate Ignites
Veterinarians warn parrots thrive best in environments resembling their natural tropical habitats, not underwater or sky high. Many bird lovers question if these stunts help enrich Bebe’s life or risk exploitation. Parakeets naturally live in forest canopies and grasslands — far from salty seas and deep dives. Still, there’s no denying Bebe’s underwater voyage is one for the record books, sparking heated discussions on the limits of pet playtime.
