Tragedy at West Wittering Beach: Teen Dies After Sea Rescue

A 17-year-old boy has died following a dramatic rescue operation off West Wittering beach, Chichester, yesterday (2 July).

Emergency Crews Race to the Scene

Emergency services, including the Hayling RNLI ILB Lifeboat and HM Coastguard, rushed to the beach around 12:50pm amid fears for the boy’s safety in the water. The situation quickly escalated, prompting a multi-agency rescue effort. The teenager was on a school trip with a group from Uxbridge College, London.

Heroic Airlift Ends in Heartbreak

Despite the rapid response, the boy was airlifted to hospital where he was tragically confirmed dead. Authorities have informed his next of kin.

Detective Inspector Darren Taylor said: “This was an absolutely tragic incident and I would like to express my sincere condolences to the boy’s loved ones at this heartbreaking time.”

He added, “A police investigation, supported by the Health and Safety Executive, is underway to establish the full facts.”

Authorities Appeal for Witnesses

Police are urging anyone with information to come forward and assist the investigation. DI Taylor said: “We are asking anyone who has any information that could help to contact us online or via 101, quoting Operation Redhill.”
