Tragic Murder Inquiry Launched After Pregnant Teacher Found Dead
Police Scotland opened a murder investigation on Thursday night after discovering the tragic death of 35-year-old Marelle Sturrock at her home in Glasgow.
Partner Sought as Authorities Search for Answers
Ms Sturrock was found dead on Tuesday morning at her Jura Street house. She was 29 weeks pregnant, and sadly, her unborn child also died.
Detective Superintendent Nicola Kilbane confirmed that Marelle’s partner, David Yates, is wanted in connection with her death. “At this time, we have no evidence that anyone else was involved,” she said.
Yates’ white Seat Ateca was found abandoned at Mugdock Country Park, eight miles north of the home, where officers have since conducted extensive searches. The last confirmed sighting of him was Sunday evening just after 8pm.
“His movements after abandoning the vehicle are unknown, but there is no proof he has left the area,” Kilbane added.
Family and School Community Devastated
Heartbroken sister Sarah Sturrock said, “There are no words for how utterly devastating this is for us as a family. I’ll never understand how this could have happened to her.”
Marelle worked at Sandwood Primary School, where she was deeply loved by pupils and colleagues alike.
Principal Fiona Donnelly described the school as “devastated.” She praised Marelle’s kindness, dedication, and artistic talents. Marelle was also the school’s music champion, known for leading choirs and performing on stage at The King’s Theatre.
Parents received a letter informing them of the death on Wednesday, with education psychologists available to support students.
Friends Pay Tribute to Beloved Performer and Teacher
Just days before she died, Marelle shared photos enjoying a night out with friends.
“Stunned and saddened to read of the loss of this beautiful young woman. Marelle was vibrant and special — she made an imprint on many lives,” said a former coworker.
Marelle was a talented singer and actress, celebrated by the Glasgow Light Opera Club and the Wick Players, where she performed as a teenager.
The Wick Players commented: “She followed her dream through drama and music studies at university, showing breathtaking talent.”
The Glasgow Light Opera Club added: “She was a kind, generous soul who inspired everyone who knew her. The stage will never be the same without her light.”
