Massive Tobacco Bust in North Kent: £76K Worth of Illegal Ciggies Seized
Kent cops cracked down hard between April 3 and 4, swooping on eight shops across North Kent. Their haul? A staggering 242,500 cigarettes and 1,516 pouches of smuggled tobacco, clocking in at a street value of around £76,000.
Team Effort Nets Big Catch
The two-day crackdown saw officers teaming up with Gravesham Council, Kent Trading Standards, HMRC, and Home Office Immigration Enforcement. Together, they launched a laser-focused operation to root out the illegal trade.
Spy Dogs Sniff Out Hidden Stashes and Secret Tunnels
Specialist detection dogs Bran and Yoyo were the heroes on the ground. Bran, a working cocker spaniel, sniffed out tobacco hidden behind basement tiling. When officers lifted a false panel, they uncovered a tunnel connecting to a neighbour’s shop. Inside that secret passage lay the largest single seizure yet — over 148,000 cigarettes and 1,315 pouches of tobacco.
In another brazen hideout, officers traced a chute behind a counter up to a flat above the shop. Yoyo’s keen nose detected more illicit tobacco. Forced entry uncovered 58,900 cigarettes and 135 tobacco pouches stashed behind magnetic secret compartments inside three false walls.
Official Comments: A Serious Crime with Big Health and Business Risks
Inspector James Beautridge of North Kent’s Community Safety Unit fired a warning: “This operation shows just how deep this problem runs and the desperate lengths some shop owners go to avoid detection.”
“Illicit tobacco not only risks public health but undermines honest businesses. Strict regulations are in place to protect consumers from dangerous, unregulated products.”
“Kent Police will keep joining forces with our partners to crack down on illegal tobacco sales and bring offenders to justice.”
Alongside tobacco, illegal vapes were also confiscated, and fines slapped on immigration offenders.
Tano Grima, Assistant Director of South East Immigration Enforcement, added: “This is a great result and highlights the critical role of Immigration Enforcement in fighting crime.”
“Offenders not only break the law and cheat the public purse, but may also be vulnerable to exploitation without legal protections.”
“We’re committed to protecting those at risk of modern slavery and proud to play a part in this coordinated crackdown.”
