Teen Tragically Dies in Abersychan Quarry Fall

A 15-year-old boy from Pontypool has died after falling into a quarry near Limekiln Road, Abersychan, Torfaen, on Wednesday evening. The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the local community.

Girl Rescued by Coastguard Helicopter

Meanwhile, a 14-year-old girl from Blaenavon was rescued from the same quarry. HM Coastguard dispatched a helicopter from St Athan, winching a paramedic down to reach her. The girl was airlifted to Cardiff’s University Hospital of Wales where she is currently being treated.

South Wales Fire and Rescue sent two crews following a 6.30 pm emergency call to Welsh Ambulance Service. Due to the dangerous terrain, the Coastguard stepped in at 7.20 pm to assist with the rescue.

Community in Mourning, Support Rallies

Torfaen Council is working closely with the boy’s school to provide support. “Our colleagues from the educational psychology service have been at the school since the start of the day,” said a council spokesperson, adding that further counselling support is offered.

The land where the incident occurred is privately owned.

Reverend John Edward Funnell of Abersychan’s Noddfa Church praised the community’s response: “The valley has come together wonderfully. We received many messages as helicopters flew overhead, and everyone was deeply concerned.”

“This morning the community has rallied together to support each other. The school and emergency services have been fantastic. I’m so proud of how our valley has banded together during this difficult time.” – Reverend John Edward Funnell

Councillor Janet Jones, representing Blaenavon, said: “This tragic incident will reverberate throughout the communities of Blaenavon and Abersychan. My thoughts are with the families, and I am confident the community will come together to support them.”
