Baby’s Death After ‘Untrained’ Circumcision Sparks Safety Alarm

A six-month-old boy has died just days after a circumcision performed by someone with no formal training. The tragic case has triggered urgent warnings from a coroner about the dire lack of safety rules around non-therapeutic male circumcisions in the UK.

Mohamed Abdisamad underwent the procedure on February 12, 2023, recommended by an unqualified circumciser to his desperate parents. Within days, the baby fell seriously ill and was rushed by ambulance to Hillingdon Hospital on February 19.

Tragically, Mohamed suffered cardiac and respiratory arrest and was pronounced dead just before midnight. An inquest later found he died from a severe streptococcus pyogenes infection caused by the circumcision.

Coroner Blasts Lack of Controls

Assistant Coroner Anton van Dellen slammed the shocking safety failings and issued a stark Prevention of Future Deaths report. He revealed anyone can legally perform a non-therapeutic circumcision in the UK with zero training or oversight.

“During the inquest, the evidence revealed matters giving rise to concern. In my opinion, there is a risk that future deaths could occur unless action is taken,” Dr van Dellen warned.

Safety Measures? None In Sight

  • No official accreditation or registration for circumcision practitioners.
  • No mandatory record keeping of procedures.
  • No hygiene or infection control protocols during or after surgery.
  • No required aftercare like wound dressing or pain relief.
  • No proper system for getting parental consent.

The report has been sent to the Department of Health and Social Care and the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government. Both face a 56-day deadline to respond.

Families and Services Alarmed

Mohamed’s close family and the London Ambulance Service have also been informed. This heartbreaking tragedy exposes urgent gaps in regulation that leave innocent babies at risk and demands swift government action before another child is lost.
