Blast from the Gap! Lord Blunkett’s Near-Tragic Fall on London Tube

Blind Peer’s Close Call on Westminster Platform

Lord David Blunkett, the blind former Home Secretary, has revealed his terrifying fall into the gap between train and platform at Westminster Underground station. The 77-year-old needed hospital treatment after his legs slipped into the chasm while boarding a District Line train with his guide dog.

“As I took a step to get onto the tube train, I suddenly felt both my feet disappearing down the gap,” Lord Blunkett recalls. “In an instant, my body was propelled forward into the carriage, and I was face down on the floor. My legs had somehow been scraped out of the gap and into the carriage.”

Passersby Pull Lord Blunkett to Safety

Fellow passengers rushed in to haul the former Labour peer to safety. Having previously battled a heart attack and intensive care, Lord Blunkett described the agony in his legs as “excruciating pain.” Though treated for injuries, he continues with follow-up hospital care amid ongoing discomfort and distress.

“Death Traps” on the Tube: Calls for TfL to Act Now

Lord Blunkett blasted some London Underground platforms as outright “death traps” and demanded urgent action from Transport for London (TfL). He slammed the complacency of simple warnings like ‘mind the gap’ without concrete safety improvements:

“How many others have fallen and been seriously injured because of the gap? It is not good enough to simply say ‘mind the gap’ and not give any help. We need action now to avoid preventable injury or worse.”

He’s set to meet TfL officials next month to push for better protections—especially for blind and visually impaired travellers.

TfL Apologises, Promises Safety Overhaul

Nick Dent, Director of Customer Operations at London Underground, apologised for the incident:

“We were extremely sorry that Lord Blunkett was injured on our network. We are undertaking a huge range of work aimed at eradicating such incidents and making travelling even safer for everyone.”

Dent assured that TfL will learn from the fall and bolster safety measures across all stations.

The Wider Fight for Accessible Transport

Lord Blunkett’s frightening slip has cast a spotlight on the struggles disabled passengers face daily on London’s public transport. Campaigners are now demanding stronger investments in accessible infrastructure and better staff training to protect vulnerable travellers and prevent future horrors.
