A 14-year-old boy from Planalto, Brazil, has died after injecting himself with a concoction made from a crushed butterfly. The shocking act was reportedly linked to a dangerous online challenge.
Davi Nunes Moreira endured a week of severe pain, vomiting, and difficulty walking before his condition worsened. He finally confessed to his family that he had injected the homemade mixture into his leg, after initially hiding the truth.
Hospital Battle Ends in Heartbreak
Davi was rushed to hospital, where doctors fought for seven days to save him. Despite their efforts, he died on February 18 from complications related to the injection.
His father later discovered a syringe hidden under his son’s pillow, confirming suspicions about the boy’s secret and dangerous act.
Investigation Launched Into Cause of Death
The Civil Police of Bahia have opened an official probe. Medical experts are baffled but suggest the injection may have caused fatal complications such as embolism, infection, or an allergic reaction.
“His death could have been caused by an embolism, an infection, or an allergic reaction. We don’t know how he prepared the mixture or the size of the butterfly fragments he injected. There may also have been air left inside the syringe, which could lead to an embolism,” said Dr. Luiz Fernando D. Relvas.

Local reports tie Davi’s death to a bizarre online challenge, though some conflicting information remains. Whether he took part or not, the tragedy has reignited fears over the dangers of social media dares.
Experts urge parents to be vigilant, warning that many online challenges push vulnerable teens to take extreme risks for likes or peer approval.
“This devastating incident highlights the urgent need for open conversations about internet safety,” Dr. Relvas added. “Teenagers must understand not everything online is safe, and parents should monitor what their children are exposed to.”
