Over 2,000 Kids in Washington, D.C. Get FREE Paddington Books! The beloved British classic “Paddington” has landed in the hands of thousands of children across Washington, D.C., thanks to a smashing team-up between the British Embassy, HarperCollins, and Washington, D.C. Public Schools. This smashing giveaway aims to boost early reading skills and celebrate Britain’s cultural charm.
Paddington Bear Hits 65 Years
This year marks a massive milestone – 65 years since Michael Bond gifted the world the lovable bear from darkest Peru. Born out of post-war Britain by a WWII vet and former BBC cameraman, Paddington’s cheeky adventures have leapt off the page into TV, movies, toys, and even statues. The classic tale remains a firm favourite across the globe.
British Embassy’s Push for Literacy
To mark Paddington’s big birthday, the British Embassy joined forces with publishers HarperCollins to drop copies of the book into the hands of 2,500 pupils at 10 Title I public schools in D.C. These schools serve youngsters aged 3 to 9 from diverse, often less-privileged backgrounds. Title I is a key US federal scheme designed to level the education playing field, making quality learning possible for all.
Star-Studded Storytime
The celebrations hit a high note on December 11 at Dorothy Heights Elementary School, where His Majesty’s Ambassador to the US, Dame Karen Pierce, teamed up with Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser for a live reading of “Paddington” to 150 excited students. They were joined by the Chancellor of D.C. Public Schools, Dr. Lewis Ferebee, and Principal Masi Preston, making it a star-studded occasion.
Ambassador Pierce Speaks Out
“It was a pleasure to join Mayor Bowser, Chancellor Ferebee, and Principal Preston to read Paddington Bear to students at Dorothy I. Height Elementary School,” said Ambassador Pierce. “Paddington’s enduring lessons of kindness and resilience continue to inspire children worldwide as we celebrate the book’s 65th anniversary. We are thrilled to provide Paddington books to over 2,000 students across D.C., in partnership with HarperCollins. It’s a privilege to introduce a new generation to this iconic British story.”
More Than Just a Book
The Paddington giveaway isn’t just a celebration of a literary icon — it’s a lifeline for early literacy, helping shape young minds through the power of stories. The British Embassy’s commitment to cultural exchange and education shines through this initiative, bringing British charm and global lessons right into D.C. classrooms.
As Paddington Bear continues to win hearts worldwide, this bold move reminds us all how stories can bridge cultures and inspire generations to come.
