Chemical Chaos in Fleet as Emergency Crews Race to Contain Toxic Gas
Emergency services sprang into action in Fleet last night after reports of a chemical incident on Pine Grove. Police sealed off parts of the street while a Detection, Identification and Monitoring (DIM) unit carried out urgent tests inside homes cordoned off by fire and police crews.
Hazmat Team Battles Unknown Chemical Cloud
The alarm was raised just after 9pm, calling in fire crews and a Hazard Area 1 unit from the South East Coast Ambulance Service. No injuries have been reported, but specialists remain on scene as the chemical hasn’t yet been fully identified.
Crews from Basingstoke, Fleet, and the DIM unit closed the road for three hours during forensic testing. Officials eventually revealed the noxious cloud was a toxic mix of chlorine tablets, water, and battery acid. The hazardous combo was left behind after the homeowner attempted to clean a caravan water system.
Police Stand Guard as Investigation Continues
The property remains in darkness and heavily guarded, with officers outside to keep the public safe. Early this morning, fire teams revisited the home to ensure all traces of the chemical haze were properly cleared.
Residents are advised to stay clear as authorities continue their investigation into the dangerous chemical mishap.
