Commissioner Cressida Dick Promises Met Will Keep London Safe Amid COVID-19 Crisis

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Cressida Dick has vowed the force will maintain top-notch service during the COVID-19 outbreak. Speaking from a patrol in Croydon, she reassured Londoners the Met remains fully committed to fighting crime and protecting the public—no matter the challenges.

“We’re Here for London”

“This is a tremendously worrying time for London and the whole country,” said Dick. “But we are absolutely determined to provide the best possible public service. The Met is here to protect people and stop crime wherever we can—and we will continue to do that.”

She highlighted the Met’s flexibility, saying, “We have a well-rehearsed plan and the ability to shift people and resources to meet whatever demands arise.” Her senior team is working closely with the Government, City Hall, and health authorities to keep plans up to date.

Ready for Anything: Contingency Plans in Place

  • The Met is part of the London Resilience Group with City of London Police, London Fire Brigade, London Ambulance, local authorities, and the Mayor’s Office.
  • All COVID-19-related incidents follow Public Health England (PHE) guidelines, and police powers align with National Police Chiefs Council advice.
  • An experienced command team, led by Assistant Commissioner Mark Simmons, manages the Met’s internal and external response.
  • Robust contingency plans cover potential disruptions, including cancelled public events and shifting workforce needs.
  • Daily health and safety updates support officers and staff, with personal protective equipment (PPE) issued where necessary.

Commissioner Dick made it clear: “We will keep our core policing duties and adapt as needed to keep London safe during this pandemic.”
