City of London Police Crack Down on Illegal E-Bikes
The City of London Police have swooped on the capital’s streets, seizing 26 illegal e-bikes in a fierce two-day blitz. The crackdown targeted modified electric bicycles flouting the law around Bishopsgate and Aldgate.
Two Days, 26 Seized and 10 Fines Issued
Last week, officers from the cycle team joined forces with the Road Policing Unit and Neighbourhood Policing squad for two intense four-hour operations on 1 and 2 May. The result? 26 unauthorised e-bikes confiscated and 10 fixed penalty notices slapped on riders caught breaking the rules.
Dangerous Mods Push Speed Limits to Breaking Point
The seized bikes were fitted with illegal upgrades: motors exceeding the 250-watt legal limit and throttles that let riders zoom without pedalling. Some of these beasts could hit nearly 31mph – double the maximum 15.5mph allowed by law, placing riders and pedestrians at serious risk.
Chief Superintendent Rob Atkin MBE, who led the crackdown, warned: “We are addressing complaints from the public concerned about these vehicles. People have told us they’ve nearly been hit, and seen riders riding on pavements and running red lights.”
Atkin also revealed a shocking find: “One of the bikes we seized can reach a terrifying speed of 56mph.”
Police Send Clear Message: Illegal E-Bikes Won’t Be Tolerated
This swift enforcement highlights the police’s vow to protect everyone in the Square Mile. With these rogue e-bikes endangering lives and breaking City of London regulations, officers are determined to keep the streets safe and crack down on reckless behaviour.
