Tragic Loss: West Midlands Sergeant Killed in Smethwick Crash

A beloved West Midlands police officer has died after a devastating car collision near Smethwick. Sergeant Paul Frear, 45, was critically injured on his way to work yesterday morning and passed away the next day, leaving a community in shock.

Sergeant Paul Frear: A Hero Remembered

Sergeant Frear was struck by a vehicle close to Smethwick Rolfe Street Station on Tollhouse Way. Despite life-saving efforts, he died surrounded by his family today.

Paul had served with West Midlands Police for 21 years, joining back in August 2002. For the past five years, he was a respected member of the Low Hill, Bushbury, and Fallings Park neighbourhood teams, always dedicated to protecting local communities.

In 2017, Paul earned the Chief Constable’s Award for his quick-thinking emergency first aid after a double stabbing outside a Wolverhampton nightclub—a heroic act that saved both victims’ lives.

My thoughts, and those of everyone within my office, are with his family, particularly his wife and children,” said Simon Foster of West Midlands Police. “We will fly the Force flags at half-mast to honour Paul’s sacrifice.”

The police are appealing for anyone with information about the crash to come forward. Witnesses can contact officers on 101, quoting log 649 from September 21, 2023.
