Man Arrested After Horrific Mosque Attack in Birmingham
Man Sprayed and Set on Fire Walking Home from Mosque
West Midlands Police have arrested a man suspected of attempted murder after a chilling attack near a mosque in Birmingham. The victim was sprayed with an unknown substance on Shenstone Road, Edgbaston, around 7pm on Monday. The spray ignited his jacket, causing burns to his face.
He was rushed to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.
Possible Link to Similar West London Attack
Officers are probing whether this horrific assault is linked to a similar incident in West London. On 27 February, an 82-year-old man was set on fire outside the West London Islamic Centre on Singapore Road in Ealing.
The Metropolitan Police are investigating the London case as part of wider inquiries.
Police Investigate with Counter Terrorism Support
Detectives are reviewing CCTV footage and witness accounts, including videos circulating on social media showing the attack. Deputy Superintendent James Spencer said:
“We’re determined to find the person responsible.” “I’ve spoken to the community this morning, and I know how concerned they are and eager for answers.” “We encourage people to avoid speculation and help us with the investigation.”
Chief Superintendent Richard North, Birmingham Police commander, added:
“Our investigation continues with support from West Midlands Counter Terrorism Unit, who have specialist resources to uncover the full facts.” “We have officers patrolling the neighbourhood and visiting local faith institutions to reassure residents.”
Extra Police Patrols and Community Appeals
Extra officers will be on patrol today to speak directly with residents and offer reassurance. Police urge anyone with information about either attack to come forward immediately.
