Greenwich Wildlife Network Faces Crisis as Rescues Soar

The Greenwich Wildlife Network (GWN), a vital lifeline for injured and abandoned animals in South East London, is begging for emergency support. Overwhelmed by a surge in rescues, the charity is scrambling to move to a bigger base — and fast.

Record-Breaking Rescues Push Centre to Breaking Point

2024 has smashed records. GWN’s SE18 unit is bursting at the seams after rescuing more than 2,275 animals this year — nearly double last year’s figure. The charity has been forced to turn animals away for the first time ever.

“This isn’t just about space—it’s about survival,” said Rae Gellel, GWN spokesperson. “We’ve reached a point where we either expand or face collapse. The animals—and our charity—cannot wait any longer.”

Big Plans, Bigger Bills: New Facility Needed

The expansion will cost an extra £300–£400 per month on rent alone, plus significant renovation and equipment expenses. The upgrade will allow GWN to:

  • Set up a dedicated fox holding pen for after-hours rescues.
  • Create indoor aviaries to help birds prepare for release.
  • Build a safe haven for domestic animals like rabbits in emergencies.

Power Partnership and Fundraising Drive

GWN has teamed up with local charity Roots4Life to access The Baker Centre’s 8.6-acre site for new aviaries and soft-release zones, boosting their wildlife care capabilities.

The charity urgently needs to raise £10,000 to cover:

  • Deposit and initial rent on the new unit
  • Crucial upgrades and equipment
  • Materials for aviary construction at The Baker Centre

So far, the community has chipped in £1,484, but the gap is huge and time is running out.

How You Can Save Local Wildlife

GWN is calling on Londoners to step up now:

  • Donate via PayPal or bank transfer — every penny counts.
  • Spread the word to boost visibility and support.
  • Volunteer to help run the expanded centre; training provided.
  • Volunteer electrician wanted ASAP to fit a light switch in the new facility.

Voices from the Community

Support is flooding in. Emily Poyser-Beezley praised the charity on social media: “What you do is invaluable across London and beyond.”

Ron Parsons shared the campaign widely: “This is a critical moment for a charity that does so much for our local wildlife.”
