Surrey on High Alert as Wildfires and Drownings Spike in Sizzling Weather

Blazing Hot Weather Fuels Surrey Wildfire Surge

Surrey firefighters have slammed the alarm after a sharp rise in fires due to the scorching dry spell. Since May, crews have tackled over 40 wildfires, including a massive four-day blaze at Whitmoor Common. The cause? Careless barbecues and discarded cigarettes left smouldering in tinder-dry surroundings.

Fire chiefs are warning: dry sunshine means fires start fast and spread faster. Bonfires and barbecues are flying dangerously close to flammable sheds, fences, and garden buildings, with at least 15 house fires reported in just two months.

Bonfires and Barbecues: A Recipe for Disaster

Surrey Fire and Rescue Service urges everyone to ditch bonfires for now. “A moment’s carelessness could wreck your home or the countryside,” says Bryn Strudwick, Community Safety Manager. Even a stray spark or reflected sun from sunglasses can ignite deadly flames.

“Make sure cigarettes, matches, and BBQ fires are fully out,” he adds. “Remember, smoke alarms save lives — keep them working.”

Hidden Dangers Lurk Beneath Surrey’s Open Waters

Hot weather tempts many to cool off in Surrey’s lakes and rivers, but firefighters warn of deadly risks below the surface. Water temperatures can shock swimmers, while strong currents and unseen hazards have contributed to tragic drownings.

Since 2013, 21 have drowned in Surrey’s open waters, including a recent fatality near Redhill. The council’s Denise Turner-Stewart said: “Enjoy your summer safely. Listen to firefighters’ advice on fire and water safety to protect yourself and others.”

Stay alert, Surrey. Dry heat and open water can be a deadly combo this summer. Take extra care with fires and think twice before plunging into natural waters.
