Tragic Stand-off in Dagenham Ends in Fatal Police Shooting
On Thursday, 23 November at 8pm, police were called to a Weston Green address in Dagenham after a man threatened to take his own life. The desperate occupant also claimed he was armed with loaded firearms.
Firearms Unit and Negotiator Called In
Given the serious nature of the threat, specialist firearms officers and a negotiation expert were immediately dispatched to the scene. Officers worked tirelessly to engage with the man, hoping to end the tense standoff peacefully.
Shots Fired and Man Dies at Scene
Just before 9pm, police fired shots. Officers quickly administered first aid and CPR. Despite heroic efforts by emergency teams, the man was pronounced dead at 9:30pm.
Investigation Underway
Police discovered a non-police firearm at the property, and a search indicated no one else was present during the incident. Commander Kyle Gordon expressed condolences to the man’s family, believed to be around 40 years old, and the local community.
“My thoughts are with the loved ones of the man who has died, with the local community in Dagenham and the officers involved in this incident,” said Commander Gordon. “His next of kin has been informed and they will receive our full support.”
The Metropolitan Police’s Directorate of Professional Standards and the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) have launched independent investigations.
“We have been notified by the Metropolitan Police Service that a man has been fatally shot during an incident in Dagenham shortly before 9pm. We have begun an independent investigation and our investigators have been sent to the scene to gather evidence. No further information is available at this time,” said an IOPC spokesman.
