Donald Trump Hit with New Georgia Charges Over 2020 Election Shake-Up
Fresh Indictment Rocks Trump’s 2024 Campaign
Former US President Donald Trump faces a fresh legal hammer blow as a Georgia grand jury slaps him with a fourth set of criminal charges. The indictment accuses Trump of orchestrating a scheme to overturn his 2020 election loss to Joe Biden.
Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis has filed 11 counts against Trump, including serious charges like forgery and racketeering — tactics usually reserved for organised crime busts. These latest charges pile on the mounting legal woes for the Republican front-runner ahead of the 2024 White House race.
Co-Conspirators Named in Bombshell Case
Trump isn’t going it alone; 18 others, including key insiders, share the spotlight in this explosive case. High-profile names charged alongside him are Mark Meadows, his ex-White House chief of staff, and lawyers Rudy Giuliani and John Eastman.
January 2 Phone Call Under the Microscope
The indictment zeroes in on a pivotal phone call on January 2, 2021, where Trump allegedly pressured Georgia’s top election official, Brad Raffensperger, to “find” enough votes to flip the state. Raffensperger reportedly resisted the push. Just days later, Trump’s supporters stormed the US Capitol on January 6 in a deadly bid to stop Biden’s win from being certified.
Electoral College Scheme in Focus
Prosecutors also allege Trump’s team tried to sabotage the election by submitting fake slates of electors. These electors play a crucial role in the Electoral College, which officially picks the president and vice-president.
Trump lashes out, blasting the charges as a “political witch hunt.” He fiercely denies any wrongdoing, dismissing the probe as yet another attack on his presidency.
