A pilot’s quick thinking saved lives after a small plane was forced to make a nerve-wracking emergency landing on a bustling motorway. Commuters on Pennsylvania’s Interstate 78 were left stunned as the aircraft narrowly avoided crashing into baffled drivers on Saturday morning.
Dashcam Captures Daring Touchdown
A moment captured on a dashcam shows the pilot expertly navigating the plane along the highway when engine trouble struck shortly after takeoff from Solberg, New Jersey. The 65-year-old Michigan pilot had no choice but to use the busy dual carriageway as a makeshift runway while en route to Indiana. A witness described the scene: “He landed in two lanes. His wings stretched from nearly the centre median to the grass verge on the other side. He looked calm, just staring straight ahead – no panic at all.”
Passengers Safe After High-Stakes Landing
Miraculously, neither the pilot nor the 34-year-old passenger suffered any injuries. Emergency crews quickly responded, helping tow the plane to a nearby airport in Allentown for repairs. Weisenberg Volunteer Fire Chief Justin Oswald praised the outcome, saying, “This is probably the best possible result for an incident like this. Everyone worked together smoothly, despite never training for something like a plane landing on a highway.”
Highway Reopened, FAA Launches Investigation
Traffic on the eastbound lanes of I-78 was fully restored by 1pm, after temporary closures for emergency response. Meanwhile, the Federal Aviation Administration has launched a formal inquiry into the incident.
