Knife Crime Plummets by Nearly a Quarter in Kent Thanks to Tough Policing
Knife crime in Kent has taken a massive nosedive, dropping by almost 25%, according to official Government stats. The sharp fall is credited to relentless policing and targeted crackdowns. Officers’ no-nonsense approach is paying off, with 226 fewer offences recorded in the county.
Figures Show Sharp Drop Before Lockdown
Data from the Office for National Statistics compares the year ending March 2020 to the previous year, unaffected by the COVID-19 lockdown. This shows that even before the pandemic, police were making serious headway tackling knife crime.
Operation Sceptre Tackles Knife Carriers Head-On
Kent Police’s involvement in Operation Sceptre—the national campaign aimed at slashing knife crime—has been a game changer. Arrests of those caught carrying weapons are on the rise, thanks to planned operations.
- On 11 July, Medway officers teamed up with British Transport Police at Gillingham Train Station, seizing two knives and class A drugs, arresting two teens.
- A Canterbury burglar landed a four-year jail term after threatening homeowners with a knife.
- In Folkestone, police charged a suspected drug dealer caught with class A drugs and a lock knife during a vehicle stop.
Community Education Plays Major Role
Police aren’t just busting offenders—they’re hitting the streets and schools to prevent knife crime. Police Community Support Officers and volunteer cadets regularly visit educational centres, urging youths to make smarter choices and stay safe.
Officers share real-life stories to drive home the dangers of knife crime, aiming to curb violence and anti-social behaviour across Kent.
Zero Tolerance Led by Kent Police Deputy Chief
Tony Blaker, Deputy Chief Constable of Kent Police, said: “This drop in knife crime reports shows our officers’ hard work paying off with a zero-tolerance stand on weapons in our communities.
“Through targeted enforcement and education, we’re removing dangerous knives from the streets. The message is clear: if you carry a knife in Kent—even for protection—you face arrest, prosecution, and tough penalties.”
“Kent is a safe county, and we intend to keep it that way. Knife crime here will simply not be tolerated.”
