Knife-wielding man sparks major police siege
A dramatic 15-hour standoff unfolded on Lewisham High Street after a man was spotted waving a knife and shouting from a third-floor window. The incident began around 10:45am on February 10, sparking a swift and heavy police response.
Armed officers locked down the area, shutting nearby roads including those by HSBC bank, Lee High Road, Belmont Hill, and Rennell Street (A2211).
Specialist officers storm flat, suspect detained
After lengthy negotiations, specialist police finally entered the property at 2:35am on February 11. They found the man alone inside and detained him without further incident.
Arrest made, man remains in hospital
The suspect was arrested on suspicion of affray and threats to kill before being taken to hospital for medical assessment. As of February 12, he remains in medical care and no charges have yet been filed.
A Metropolitan Police spokesperson confirmed all road closures have been lifted and thanked local residents for their patience.
Police clarify no hostages involved
Detective Chief Superintendent Trevor Lawry, head of policing for the South East area, said: “To clarify, this situation did not involve any hostages, and our specially-trained officers engaged with a man who was believed to be suffering a mental health crisis.”
Investigation continues
The Metropolitan Police are carrying out a full investigation. It remains unclear whether formal charges will be brought against the suspect.
