A huge blaze at a recycling site on Crete Hall Road, Northfleet, has triggered urgent public health warnings. Thick smoke is choking Gravesend town centre and drifting all the way to Tilbury in Essex.
Fire Rages Overnight, Emergency Services Mobilised
The fire broke out just after 2am on Monday, 26 May. Kent Fire and Rescue sprang into action with six fire engines, a bulk water carrier, and a command support unit battling the inferno.
Smoke Plume Forces Health Warning Across Two Counties
As of 8:10pm on Tuesday, 27 May, firefighters remain on site. Authorities warn locals in Gravesend and Tilbury to keep windows and doors tightly shut. The dense smoke poses a serious risk, especially for children and those with respiratory issues.
“Crews are making good progress in extinguishing the flames, but due to the volume of smoke, residents are advised to keep their homes sealed and avoid outdoor exposure. This advice remains in effect until further notice,” said a spokesperson for Kent Fire and Rescue Service.
Firefighters Battle Blaze around the Clock
Teams have been working in shifts for over 40 hours, wielding main hose jets, ground monitors, and ventilation fans to fight the relentless fire.
The Environment Agency is also on hand given the environmental hazards linked to the recycling materials. The cause remains unknown and will be investigated once the fire is out.
Fire crews expect to stay at the scene for another 24 to 48 hours, monitoring hot spots to ensure the fire is fully extinguished.
Public Urged to Spread the Word
Kent Fire and Rescue urges everyone to share these warnings widely, especially with neighbours and vulnerable people who may not have internet access.
