Arson Attack Destroys Community Project Domes in Heckmondwike

Police in Batley and Spen want to track down a group of four men believed to be involved in a blaze that severely damaged the Ponderosa centre’s innovative domes. The fire tore through fibreglass structures and other materials at the site on Smithies Lane, Heckmondwike, on the evening of Wednesday, October 21st.

Blaze Hits New Support Project for Vulnerable Locals

The fire broke out around 5.14pm, destroying domes designed to offer creative activities and social space for those struggling with incurable illnesses, depression, or simply needing support. The Ponderosa centre, which also hosts a zoo, had been developing these domes as part of their groundbreaking TALK scheme.

Howard Cook MBE, who spearheaded the project, said: “When I took the land over from Yorkshire Water, I made a commitment to make it a community project. We’ve been working on it for 2 to 3 years, putting the money back into rehabilitating the land.”

He added: “TALK was designed to be a space where people can build, plant, or just have a chat over a cup of tea. It’s a place of respite for those suffering serious physical and mental health conditions.”

Sadly, the domes were set to become fully operational this year before the fire destroyed them.

Police Appeal to Identify Suspects

PC Lucy Ramsden of Batley and Spen NPT said: “This arson has caused significant damage to a very worthy project helping vulnerable people during their darkest times. It was a completely senseless and dangerous act. We are investigating fully and supporting the centre.”

She urged anyone who can identify the men pictured or has information to come forward.
