John Apter Makes History as First Police Federation National Chair Elected by Officers Nationwide
In a landmark move, John Apter has been confirmed as the new National Chair of the Police Federation of England and Wales. Formerly Chair of the Hampshire Police Federation, Apter is the first ever National Chair to be chosen by a nationwide police officer vote.
Historic Election Shakes Up Police Federation
The 2018 elections marked the debut of a new voting system, rolled out following a 2014 Independent Review of the Federation. Apter faced off against Phill Matthews, the Federation’s Conduct and Performance lead, in a tight race for the top post.
From Frontline to National Leader
John Apter’s policing career began back in 1992, where he worked in response teams, roads policing, and specialised in investigating fatal road accidents. He was elected Chair of Hampshire Police Federation in 2010, before now stepping up to represent officers across England and Wales.
As National Chair, Apter will be the voice of police welfare and interests, acting as the chief spokesperson and representing the Federation nationally.
A New Era Begins August 1
John will officially succeed current Chair Calum Macleod on 1 August 2018.
“I would like to thank Calum for all the work he has done to this date and look forward to building on his accomplishments,” said Apter.
