Ryde Lifeboat Docks After Rescuing Abandoned Inflatable Swan
The Ryde independent lifeboat, Ryde Rescue One, was scrambled just after 5.40pm on Sunday. The UK Coastguard reported a white inflatable swan toy drifting about 500 metres offshore near Ryde Beach, heading towards Portsmouth.
The crew quickly reached the scene, found the abandoned toy, and safely brought it back to shore. No one was on board the inflatable swan.
The lifeboat returned to base shortly after 6.15pm, wrapping up a busy start to the summer holidays for rescue crews.
Coastguard Warns: Inflatable Toys Are No Ocean Playthings
The UK Coastguard issued a blunt safety message following the incident:
“Blow-up toys and airbeds are designed for pools, not the sea where they can easily be swept out.
They urged beachgoers to take extra care:
- Always supervise inflatable toys closely.
- Keep them near the shore and between the red and yellow flags.
- Follow lifeguards’ instructions without fail.
- Never take inflatables out in big waves or when red flags are flying, as offshore winds can carry them far out to sea.
Stay Safe This Summer
As the holidays kick off, remember that inflatable toys might look harmless, but the sea is no place for them. Stick to safer spots and listen to lifeguards to avoid costly rescues.
