UK Sends 17 Specialist Firefighting Vehicles to Ukraine Amid Russia’s Missile Attacks

UK Boosts Ukraine’s Firefighting Arsenal

The United Kingdom is ramping up its firepower to help Ukraine battle the aftermath of relentless Russian missile strikes. London has dispatched 17 specialist firefighting vehicles, including 15 Rapid Intervention Vehicles and two Major Foam Vehicles. Most come from the Royal Air Force (RAF) and Defence Fire and Rescue, with one supplied by the Welsh Government.

Rapid Response to Russian Attacks

This vital kit, urgently needed to tackle fires caused by Russia’s cruise missiles and attack drones, is due to land in Ukraine within weeks. The vehicles were gathered from across the UK and sent to RAF Wittering in Cambridgeshire. There, RAF teams prepped the machines for deployment straight to the frontline.

Training and Preparation in Full Swing

Defence Secretary Ben Wallace hailed the delivery as critical in shielding Ukraine’s infrastructure from Moscow’s ongoing onslaught. Over the past week, 5001 Squadron checked and readied every vehicle, while 2 Mechanical Transport Squadron loaded them for transport. The RAF and Defence Fire and Rescue even ran a week-long training course at RAF Wittering to get Ukrainian Military Fire Service personnel up to speed on the new gear.

“This equipment and training will massively boost Ukraine’s firefighting capabilities,” said Sim Nex, Defence Chief Fire Officer. “Our Defence Fire and Rescue family is proud to stand with Ukraine and will keep supporting their efforts.”

Long-Term UK Commitment

This aid comes nearly 500 days after Russia’s illegal full-scale invasion of Ukraine. In 2022, the UK pledged £2.3 billion in military aid and Prime Minister Boris Johnson vowed to match that figure in 2023.

Air Commodore Jamie Thompson, Commander Global Enablement, stressed that providing specialist training and equipment remains a top priority for the RAF. “We’re proud to work with allies to safeguard the Ukrainian people,” he said.

This latest batch follows earlier UK donations, including eight tonnes of firefighting personal protective equipment, medical supplies, and over 100 industrial generators. The UK’s unwavering support continues to help Ukraine stand firm against Russian aggression.
