Four Dead as Migrant Dinghy Capsizes in Freezing English Channel

Four bodies were pulled from the icy waters off the Kent coast yesterday after an inflatable boat carrying asylum seekers was found in distress just after 3am. The death toll stands at three confirmed, with up to four people still missing and feared dead. Reports now show 39 survivors – down from an initial count of 43 – but there could have been as many as 47 on board.

Desperate SOS and Frantic Rescue Efforts

The terrifying ordeal began when a man called authorities frantically from the water at 2:53am, screaming for help while clinging to his family. “Please, please, please help me, bro. We’re in the water with a family,” he pleaded.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency launched a massive search and rescue operation immediately after being alerted at 3:05am. Aerial teams, ships, helicopters, and even a drone joined forces in bitter, near-freezing conditions as temperatures dropped to zero overnight.

Fishing Crew Heroically Saves 31 Lives

Among the rescuers was a fishing crew who stumbled upon the sinking boat while working mid-Channel between England and France. Ben Squire, owner of Oceanic Drifter Fishing in Plymouth, told reporters his skipper, Ray Strachan, helped pluck 31 terrified migrants from the freezing water.

“It appears the bottom of the inflatable boat gave way. People were in the water holding on, freezing cold,” said Squire. “The crew pulled people out with ropes as they screamed for help, wearing only t-shirts and thin life jackets.”

Ongoing Search as Hope Fades

Rescue efforts have continued for over 30 hours, with vessels, helicopters, and planes scouring the Channel. The coastguard urged all ships to remain vigilant and report any sightings. Sadly, with the water temperature so low and time elapsed, hopes are fading for the missing.

Two of those rescued were rushed to William Harvey Hospital in Ashford. Men, women, and children from Senegal, Afghanistan, India, and other countries were all aboard the ill-fated vessel.

The tragic incident highlights the perilous journey many asylum seekers face trying to reach UK shores.
