Fresh Probe Ordered into David Warburton’s Sexual Misconduct Claims
A fresh investigation has been triggered into explosive sexual misconduct allegations against fallen Tory MP David Warburton. The Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards had previously upheld three claims against the ex-MP, but now the House of Commons Independent Expert Panel (IEP) has thrown out that ruling and demanded a total reinvestigation.
Warburton Backs New Probe After Resignation Over Cocaine Scandal
Warburton, who quit Parliament on June 18 after admitting to using cocaine, welcomed the IEP’s call for a fresh look. The panel said the original inquiry was “materially flawed” and lacked proper procedure, but did not yet rule on the truth of the sexual misconduct claims. The allegations remain open as investigators prepare to launch a new probe.
Damning Allegations Include Drug Use and Unwanted Advances
The claims made against Warburton include drug abuse and unwelcome advances towards two women, according to The Sunday Times. The Tory party suspended him back in April 2022 following these accusations. Although he denied sexual misconduct, Warburton admitted to making “very bad choices” over cocaine use.
New Investigation to Decide Future — By-Election Set for July 20
The IEP panel slammed the first investigation as shambolic and declined to comment on Warburton’s counter-claims. All will be re-examined in the new investigation, which remains open. Meanwhile, voters in Somerton and Frome will head to the polls on July 20 for a by-election to pick Warburton’s replacement. To keep things fair, the IEP has withheld the full sub-panel decision to avoid prejudice before the upcoming inquiry.
What’s Next? The Stakes Stay High for Warburton
The IEP ordered the fresh investigation on June 14, before Warburton’s resignation. The new probe is set to shine a decisive light on the messy allegations and could trigger further fallout for the disgraced MP.
