Tragedy Strikes as 12-Year-Old Girl Killed by Falling Tree Branch in South London
A heartbreaking incident unfolded in Banstead, south London, where 12-year-old Brooke Etherington was crushed by a falling tree branch while out walking with friends. The tragedy occurred around 4 p.m. on Saturday, November 9, along a grassy footpath in Grove Place, near Carshalton Road.
Desperate Rescue Attempts Fail to Save Brooke
Witnesses, including residents from a nearby traveller estate, rushed to Brooke’s aid, trying to lift the heavy branches and perform CPR. Emergency crews from the London Fire Brigade and London Ambulance Service arrived quickly, but it took nearly two hours to free her. Sadly, Brooke died at the scene.
Family Launches Fundraiser and Plans Memorial
Brooke’s family, shattered by the loss of their “shining light,” have set up a fundraising page in her memory. A community memorial is planned for Brooke’s 13th birthday on Wednesday, November 13. Relatives and friends will gather at Banstead Park at 6 p.m. for a lantern and balloon release.
Tributes Pour In for “One of a Kind” Brooke
“I love you so much, you will never be forgotten, you will always be my best friend,” wrote one grieving friend.
Brooke’s cousin described her as “one of a kind,” while others remembered her as having a “heart of gold.”
Police Investigate – Death Not Treated as Suspicious
The footpath where the tragedy happened remains closed as police gather evidence. A Metropolitan Police spokesperson confirmed Brooke’s death is not suspicious and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
London Fire Brigade Assistant Commissioner Pat Goulbourne offered condolences: “The thoughts of our crews and staff across the entire Brigade are with the child’s family at this difficult time.”
