Watch Out! January Sales Are a Goldmine for Online Scammers
Online shopping is a dream – quick, comfy, and perfect for hunting bargains from your sofa. But beware: fraudsters ramp up their game during the festive season and January sales. They’re lurking, ready to pinch your cash through clever scams.
Shop Smart: Stick to Trusted Sites
- Only buy from well-known websites or brands you trust.
- Look for the padlock icon and “https://” in the browser’s address bar.
- Double-check website addresses for dodgy spellings before entering personal info.
Lock Down Your Passwords and Accounts
- Use strong passwords made from three random words with upper/lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols.
- Never reuse passwords across different sites.
- Switch on two-step verification (2FA) – it adds a vital layer of protection by asking for a code sent to your phone.
Keep Personal Details Tight
- Only fill in mandatory fields marked with an asterisk (*).
- Never provide security info like your mother’s maiden name or first pet’s name just to complete a purchase.
Spot the Scams: Phishing Emails and Texts
- Ignore suspicious emails, calls, and texts.
- Your bank will never ask for personal details or remote access to your device.
- Never trust pop-ups or unexpected calls asking for sensitive info.
“The cost-of-living crisis means great deals are tempting – but if it looks too good to be true, it probably is,” warns Kirsty Jackson, Cyber Protect and Prevention Officer at Nottinghamshire Police. “Do your research before clicking or handing over any details. Simple online habits can save you hundreds of pounds.”
How to Report Scams
If you suspect fraud, report it immediately. Help protect others by notifying the UK’s national fraud centre:
- Forward suspicious emails to [email protected]
- Text original scam messages to 7726 (that spells SPAM)
- Report fraud at www.actionfraud.police.uk or call 0300 123 2040
- If under ongoing cyber-attack, contact police on 101
Stay sharp this sales season and don’t let crooks crash your bargain hunt!
