Bella Ramsey and Jodie Whittaker Lead Gritty Women’s Prison Drama Time Series 2

The hard-hitting prison drama Time returns for a second season, plunging viewers back into the raw and unfiltered world of a modern British women’s prison. This three-part series stars Bella Ramsey (The Last of Us), Jodie Whittaker (Doctor Who), and Tamara Lawrance (The Silent Twins) as three very different inmates thrown together at Carlingford Prison. Siobhan Finneran reprises her role as Marie-Louise, the prison chaplain, from the acclaimed first series.

New Faces, New Stories – But Same Emotional Punch

Co-written by legendary writer Jimmy McGovern (Broken, Cracker) and rising star Helen Black (Life and Death in the Warehouse), the series is made by BBC Studios for BBC One and iPlayer. It offers a gripping look behind bars, exploring harsh realities like violence alongside unexpected bonds of community and shared struggles.

Bella Ramsey says, “I’m very happy to be part of this project, working with an incredible team and following on from a stellar first season. It’s an honour to be Kelsey and experience the world through her.”

Jodie Whittaker adds, “Time was such an incredible and powerful show created by an extraordinary team, and being part of this second series is an absolute dream.”

Strong Female Voices Drive Powerful Drama

Tamara Lawrance highlights the importance of telling women-centred stories that challenge stereotypes. She says, “Time humanises a sector of society too often vilified. It explores the complicated reasons people end up in the criminal justice system, and I’m excited to bring these layered characters to life.”

Siobhan Finneran reveals, “I’m delighted to return for Time two. The scripts remain heartbreakingly brilliant and it’s an honour to be asked back.”

High Praise from Creators and Executives

Jimmy McGovern calls this cast “the best I have ever seen assembled for any drama of mine,” while co-writer Helen Black says, “Writing this second season with Jimmy has been a joy and an honour.”

Andrew Morrissey, Executive Producer for BBC Studios, promises emotionally complex storytelling, stating, “We’re incredibly excited to introduce audiences to a new world and new stories.”

Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama, adds, “With Jimmy McGovern and Helen Black’s extraordinary scripts and the perfect trio of Bella, Jodie, and Tamara, BBC viewers are in for a remarkable three hours of television.”

Back by Popular Demand

The first series of Time smashed it with an average audience of 11.6 million viewers, winning the 2022 BAFTA for Best Mini-Series. Now, with this stellar new cast and powerhouse writing team, fans are eagerly awaiting the next chapter of this gripping prison drama.
