Van Plunges Over Cliff Near Roedean School
Shortly after 6.30am on Sunday 12 May, emergency services rushed to the scene after a silver Vauxhall van plunged over the cliff east of Brighton Marina, close to Roedean School. Despite their swift response, the driver – David Routhan of Nuthurst Place, Brighton – was pronounced dead at the scene.
Son’s Heartfelt Tribute to Dad
“My dad was a self-employed stonemason who loved motocross, walking his dogs, spending time with friends, and supporting Liverpool Football Club,” said his son, Rhys.
“He built a successful business, became a devoted father, and recently passed his motorbike test after years of motocross riding. Dad always lit up the room with his smile and was hardworking, loyal, and caring. He constantly put others before himself, always wanting the best for his family and friends.
“He never let anyone down and made sure everyone close to him felt loved and appreciated. Whether family, friends, or customers, his positive impact was clear. No one ever had a bad word to say about him. Happy-go-lucky, cheeky, funny, and smart – that’s how I’ll always remember Dad.”
Family Mourns Loss of Devoted Father and Friend
David leaves behind his son Rhys, mother Lorraine, siblings Darren, Nigel, Suzannah and Simon, nephew Jon, niece Sarah, and best friend David ‘Boyce’ Negus.
Brighton locals remember David as a man who brought joy everywhere he went – a tragic loss felt deeply across the community.
