Wildfires Wreck İzmir Province: Airport Shut, Thousands Evacuated

Chaos grips one of Turkey’s top holiday hotspots as fierce wildfires rage through İzmir province. The blazes have forced mass evacuations, destroyed homes, and shut down İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport, leaving travellers stranded and emergency crews battling flames.

Airport Grounded Amid Smoke and Flames

  • All flights at İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport suspended from 4pm local time due to poor visibility and safety risks.
  • Incoming jets rerouted to other Turkish airports, stranding thousands of passengers.
  • Water bombing planes and rescue helicopters scrambled to tackle the raging inferno.
  • Aerial firefighting efforts continue amid worsening conditions fueled by strong winds.

Evacuations and Devastation Sweep Through Foça

  • At least 550 residents evacuated from 175 homes in the coastal resort town of Ilıpınar, Foça.
  • Homes and vehicles gutted by fire, with charred wreckage littering neighbourhoods.
  • Four firefighters suffered smoke inhalation; two were hospitalised but remain in stable condition.
  • A huge emergency response deployed — over 625 personnel, 46 fire engines, 13 water trucks, and 6 helicopters in İzmir alone.

Arson Suspected as Investigation Widens

One man has been arrested on suspicion of arson after allegedly setting his own house ablaze, which may have sparked the disaster. Authorities are also probing whether high-voltage power lines could have ignited the fires.

Official Warnings Amid Heatwave

İzmir Governor Süleyman Elban warned: “The next four or five days will be very hot, with much at stake. We must all be extremely cautious.”

Wildfires Rage Across Western Turkey

  • Blazes are not limited to İzmir. Fires also reported in Manisa, Aydın, Denizli, Bursa, Bilecik, Bolu, Sakarya, and Gaziantep.
  • In Bilecik, 23 homes destroyed and over 60 buildings damaged by the flames.
  • Environment Minister Murat Kurum confirmed at least nine major fires are active across the region.
