US Navy Sailors Nabbed for Spilling Secrets to China
In a stunning espionage scandal, two US Navy sailors have been arrested for leaking top-secret military info to China. The shocking breach raises alarm bells over national security.
Top Brass Vows ‘Relentless’ Crackdown
Matt Olsen, Assistant Attorney General for National Security, slammed the spies at a press conference. “Sensitive military information ended up in the hands of the People’s Republic of China through the alleged crimes committed by these defendants,” he said. Olsen blasted China’s spy tactics as “unprecedented” in their boldness and scope, aiming to undermine US laws and security.
Inside the Spy Games: Who, What, When
- Jinchao “Patrick” Wei started leaking secrets in 2022 while on the USS Essex. The machinist’s mate allegedly sent a Chinese intelligence officer detailed technical manuals, blueprints, photos, and videos exposing advanced weapons systems and military tech onboard US Navy vessels.
- Petty Officer Wenheng “Thomas” Zhao took bribes for military intel, accessed via his security clearance. Posing as a maritime economic researcher, a Chinese spy recruited Zhao in 2021. He snapped photos and recorded videos of a massive Indo-Pacific military exercise, plus blueprints of a Japanese base — netting about $15,000 in payoffs.
Tensions Soar as Spy Saga Unfolds
The arrests come amid spike in US-China hostilities, with both sides trading accusations of espionage. US fears have grown after reports of Chinese spy balloons floating over sensitive military zones in North America. The two economic giants’ ongoing spy games severely strain diplomatic ties.
Despite the mess, President Joe Biden remains hopeful. He foresees a “thaw” in relations as diplomats hold regular talks, aiming to keep dialogue open amid the shadow war.
