Russia Blames US for Crimea Missile Strike – Washington Fires Back
After yesterday’s deadly missile strike in Crimea, Russia has slammed the US, accusing it of orchestrating the attack. But the US State Department quickly dismissed these claims as nonsense.
Four Dead as Missile Debris Hits Crimean Beach
The strike left four people dead and around 150 injured in Sevastopol, Crimea, when missile fragments fell onto a crowded beach. Russia’s defence ministry pointed the finger at US-supplied ATACMS missiles, claiming American experts programmed the deadly weaponry.
Moscow’s Serious Allegations Met with Swift US Denial
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov warned: “The direct involvement of the United States, resulting in Russian civilian casualties, cannot be without consequences.” But the US was having none of it. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller branded Moscow’s accusations as baseless, calling out Russia’s knack for “ridiculous, hyperbolic claims”.
A Pattern of Blame Games
Miller recalled previous false claims by Russia. “After the terror attack in Moscow in March, they blamed the US despite warnings from us beforehand. This kind of finger-pointing is a familiar Moscow tactic that isn’t backed by facts.”
US Stands Firm on Supporting Ukraine
Reiterating Washington’s position, Miller stressed: “We provide weapons to Ukraine so it can defend its sovereign territory against armed aggression, including Crimea, which is part of Ukraine. Russia could end the war and suffering right now by withdrawing from Ukrainian land and stopping attacks on civilians.”
