Ex locks up victim in terrifying home siege before jail time
On 23 October last year, Brendan Gourlay, 34, stormed into his ex’s house and slammed the door shut, barricading it with drawers and chairs. He grabbed her mobile phone, armed himself with scissors, and threatened violence against her and her son if they tried to escape or call for help.
Held captive in his ex’s home
Gourlay forced the woman to sit with him while he took a bath, making sure she didn’t run off. He followed her around all day as she struggled to do chores under his watchful eye. It was only when he left for work the next morning that the terrified mum and her boy managed to flee to safety.
Guilty plea lands him 3 years behind bars
The Oakleaf Road man, from Peterborough, pleaded guilty to controlling and coercive behaviour and two counts of harassment. He was sentenced to three years in prison at Peterborough Crown Court on 16 March and slapped with a 10-year restraining order.
Police speak out
Detective Constable Elinor Lambert said: “This was a terrifying ordeal for the victim and her son, who feared for their safety as Gourlay held them captive.”
“Gourlay subjected the victim to a number of attacks during their relationship and I’m pleased he has now been brought to justice for his actions.”
