US Soldier Who Defected to North Korea Bounced Back to America After Quick Expulsion
Travis King’s North Korea Shock Ends
Travis King, the US soldier who stunned the world by crossing from South into North Korea this summer, is now back in American hands. North Korea expelled him to China, a US official confirmed, before US authorities took custody.
Why Did King Cross the Border?
North Korea revealed King’s reasons for the bizarre defect. According to the state-run KCNA news agency, King admitted to illegally crossing the border due to feeling mistreated and facing racial discrimination within the US Army. He told investigators he was disillusioned with what he described as an unfair American society.
“He confessed to illegal intrusion due to his dissatisfaction with racial inequality and maltreatment within the US military,” KCNA reported.
From Defector to Expellee: A Rapid Reversal
King’s crossing happened on July 18 while on a civilian tour of the Joint Security Area — that tense, heavily guarded zone dividing North and South Korea. Unlike previous US soldiers who defected and spent years in North Korean custody, King’s stay was short-lived. The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) swiftly decided to eject him.
This unusual quick turnaround contrasts with other American defectors who endured long imprisonments before negotiations secured their freedom.
King’s case highlights the unusual and complex tensions along the Korean border, but for now, he is back on US soil after a rare and rapid North Korean U-turn.
