Storm Alert: Easter Sunshine Set to Be Soggy and Blustery

After a mostly dry and sunny Easter weekend, brace yourselves — the weather is about to go sideways. High pressure that brought the fine weather is packing up and moving east, swapping calm skies for blustery winds and rain sweeping in from the Atlantic.

Sunday: Rain Moves In

Met Office Chief Meteorologist Jason Kelly warns: “The dry and settled spell ends Sunday afternoon as a more unsettled pattern takes over.” Northern Ireland and Scotland get hit first with afternoon rain turning into gusty showers overnight and into Monday morning. Meanwhile, most of England stays dry but cloudy on Sunday, with wet weather edging into Wales and southwest England by evening. By Monday, rain will spread eastward with showers following close behind.

Sticky, Windy Start to the Week

The downpour won’t stop Monday or Tuesday as wet and windy conditions dominate. A brewing low-pressure system over the Atlantic is set to unleash stronger winds and heavier rain from Tuesday onwards.

Deputy Chief Meteorologist Steven Keates adds: “This developing low could cause some disruption with high winds and heavy rain late Tuesday into Wednesday. We might even see some snow on high ground in the north.”

Expect Gales and Torrential Rain

  • Possible wind gusts up to 60-70 mph in exposed coastal and upland areas
  • 30-40mm of rain forecast in many places
  • Large waves along west and south coastlines

Keates cautions that while there’s still uncertainty about the low’s exact path and strength, warnings may be needed soon. The storm is expected to drift into the North Sea by Wednesday night, but lingering wind and rain could spoil the end of the week too.
