Wildfire Alert: Worksop on Fire!

Worksop is facing a wildfire nightmare. Nottinghamshire emergency services have launched an urgent appeal to the public after a sharp spike in wildfires swept the area.

Wildfires Rage Across Worksop

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service hustled to tackle 16 wildfires in just one week. Shockingly, six of those blazes erupted on Monday, 12 May alone. Parks, hedgerows, and brand-new play equipment bore the brunt, leaving local communities shocked and authorities scrambling.

Monday’s Fiery Madness

  • 4:55pm: Fire crews from Edwinstowe and Tuxford raced to Rayton Farm Lane, battling flames across 30 square metres of grass and 400 metres of hedgerow.
  • 6:15pm: Two burning trees on Ambleside Grange demanded urgent action, quickly followed by a woodland rubbish fire at Curzon Drive.
  • 7:35pm: An unattended bonfire sparked chaos at Hannah Park on Netherton Road.
  • 8:30pm: Crews from Harworth, Worksop, and Edwinstowe tackled a rubber matting fire in a park, which threatened to spread to nearby trees.

Authorities Sound the Alarm

Bassetlaw District Manager Adrian Brizzolara warned dry, warm weather is turning the area into a blazing tinderbox. “Wildfires can explode in minutes,” he said. “Even a tiny spark can unleash a massive fire. We urge residents to avoid careless behaviour, especially open flames, and to report any suspicion immediately.”

Emergency services are urging locals to use the What3Words app to pinpoint fires quickly and save crucial response time.

Vandals Torch New £6,200 Play Equipment

Particularly heart-breaking was the deliberate destruction at Prospect Park, where brand-new climbing blocks worth over £6,200 were burnt to a crisp.

“We are extremely shocked and disappointed,” said Cllr Darrell Pulk, Bassetlaw’s Cabinet Member for Environment and Energy. “This mindless act has robbed children of a vital community asset. Our funds are limited, and it’s devastating to see resources wasted like this.”

Pulk praised the swift firefighting efforts and urged anyone with information to contact Nottinghamshire Police on 101.

Investigation Underway

Nottinghamshire Police, Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service, and Bassetlaw District Council are working together to monitor high-risk areas, educate the public, and crack down on arsonists. They promise to bring culprits to justice and prevent future fires.
