23 Years On: £10,000 Reward Offered in Search for Missing Teen Carmel Fenech

Detectives in Sussex and London are reigniting the hunt for Carmel Fenech, a 16-year-old girl who vanished over 23 years ago. The Crimestoppers charity has stepped in, offering a £10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction.

The Last Sighting: Camberwell Green Court

Carmel, also known as Carmel Pendry, was last seen on 21 May 1998 at Camberwell Green Magistrates Court in South London. She was with an unidentified man. She never returned home to Broadfield, Crawley, and was reported missing a month later. Carmel would have turned 40 on 3 July.

Focus on South London Connections

  • Carmel’s family moved to Crawley less than a year before she disappeared but had strong ties to South London.
  • They previously lived on the North Peckham Estate; Carmel had many friends in Brixton and Stockwell.
  • She had few contacts in Crawley, hinting she likely frequented South London areas before vanishing.

Police and Family Plea for New Leads

“We want to identify the man Carmel was last seen with on 21 May 1998,” said Detective Inspector Chris Rambour of the Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team. “He knew her and may hold vital clues to her disappearance.”

“Recent reviews have opened more lines of enquiry in London, and we continue working with the Metropolitan Police — but so far no significant breakthroughs.”

“Carmel’s mother, Deidre, is fully updated and supports this renewed appeal. We hope it sparks memories and leads to justice after all these years.”

“My family has lived in limbo for 23 years,” said Deidre Fenech. “Not knowing what happened to Carmel has devastated my mental and physical health. A huge part of my life is empty without her.”

“Please, if anyone has information, come forward. We need answers.”
