A Ford Transit van slammed into the Blacksmiths Arms pub on the A275 in Offham late Saturday night, May 11. The smash sent shockwaves through the village and sparked a swift emergency response.
Emergency Crews Rush to Scene
The collision happened around 10:35pm, triggering an immediate call to East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service (ESFRS). Two fire engines were dispatched to tackle the aftermath. ESFRS confirmed:
“The road was closed while emergency crews made the area safe. We isolated electrics and assessed the building’s structure. The stop message came at 1:36am. The incident was handed over to the property owner.”
The pub suffered substantial damage, with a structural engineer called in to inspect the extent of the harm.
Driver Arrested for Drink-Driving
Police investigations revealed the driver, 37-year-old Liam Torbett from Southdown Road, Newhaven, was allegedly under the influence when he crashed into the pub. Sussex Police stated:
“Police were called after a Ford Transit collided with the Blacksmiths Arms at 10:35pm on Saturday, May 11. Liam Torbett was arrested and charged with drink-driving.”
Torbett has been released on conditional bail and is due to appear at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on May 30 to face charges.
