New Year Horror: Barnsley Man Jailed for Rape
Predator Targets Drunken Woman on New Year’s Eve
Mohammed Elmi Mahamed stalked his victim, a 19-year-old woman, at a taxi rank in Barnsley town centre on New Year’s Day 2022. The young woman had been out celebrating the New Year with friends but got separated and found herself alone and intoxicated—an easy target for Mahamed.
False Promise Leads to Shocking Assault
“Our victim was vulnerable, and Mahamed preyed on her,” said Detective Constable Becky Robinson of Barnsley CID. “He promised to take her to her friends but lied. Instead, he took her to another location and subjected her to a vile sexual assault.”
The brave woman managed to escape and ran back into town, where she found a friend and reported the attack.
CCTV Snags Suspect, Gets Him Locked Up
Thanks to CCTV footage, police quickly identified Mahamed. He was arrested the very next day and charged. Despite overwhelming evidence, Mahamed denied all charges.
“The victim had to face the harrowing experience of testifying in court,” DC Robinson said. “I want to thank her for her courage throughout the investigation.”
Jailed for Nearly Seven Years
After a three-day trial at Sheffield Crown Court, Mahamed, once from Princess Street, Barnsley, was found guilty of rape on Wednesday, July 6. The court sentenced him to six years and nine months behind bars immediately.
Justice served for a New Year nightmare.
