Man Jailed for Attempted Murder at Busy London Tube Station

Arthur Hawrylewicz, from Avondale Gardens, Cardiff, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for a chilling attack at a London tube station.

Attack at Packed Hammersmith & City Line Platform

On August 29, a 22-year-old woman waiting with friends for a train to Notting Hill Carnival was targeted by Hawrylewicz. The platform was crowded with Carnival-goers around 1.30pm.

While both stood near the platform edge, Hawrylewicz tried to speak to the woman. Spotting he was drunk, she told him to leave her alone.

As the train arrived, Hawrylewicz grabbed her from behind and lifted her off the ground. He tried to fling them both in front of the incoming train, threatening to end her life.

Heroic Friends Save Victim from Death

Thanks to the quick thinking of two of the woman’s friends who pulled her to safety, disaster was averted. Hawrylewicz then put his own head in front of the train and was knocked unconscious by a glancing blow.

Police arrived swiftly and arrested him. He was treated in hospital and later interviewed, claiming he was drunk and suicidal but had no memory of the attack.

Detective Calls Attack ‘Unprovoked and Disturbing’

“This was a completely unprovoked and incredibly disturbing attack which will have been beyond terrifying for the victim – a young woman on her way to enjoy Notting Hill Carnival,” said Detective Sergeant Mike Blakeburn.

“Had it not been for her friends’ bravery, we could be dealing with a murder investigation. Hawrylewicz offers no explanation and claims no memory, but the victim faces the trauma forever. Thankfully, he now faces a long jail sentence to reflect the severity of his actions.”

“While shocking, incidents like this are very rare on the railway network. British Transport Police acted quickly to arrest Hawrylewicz and keep the public safe.”
