Cardiff dad dies after brutal Bute Park attack

A 54-year-old man assaulted in Bute Park, Cardiff, has tragically died. Dr Gary Jenkins, from Cardiff Bay, was rushed to hospital in critical condition following the early hours attack on Tuesday, July 20.

Beloved father and husband mourned

Dr Jenkins passed away at the University Hospital of Wales on Thursday, August 5. His family described him as a devoted father, husband, and brother. They said:

“We are distraught to announce the untimely death of Dr Gary Jenkins, who was a loving father of two wonderful daughters. He lived his life happily with family, music, creativity, and dedication to his profession. We ask for privacy during this difficult time.”

Three charged and held in custody

Three individuals have been charged with attempted murder over the assault. Police say they are not currently searching for anyone else in connection with the attack.

  • Jason Edwards, 25
  • Lee William Strickland, 36
  • A 16-year-old girl, identity protected for legal reasons

All three remain in custody and are set to appear in court on August 23.

Police launch murder investigation

Senior Investigating Officer A/Detective Chief Inspector Stuart Wales, of South Wales Police Major Crime Investigation Team, said:

“We are aware of the sad passing of Dr Gary Jenkins and our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time. We are working with the Crown Prosecution Service and HM Coroner as this case is now being treated as a murder investigation.

“We thank the public for their valuable assistance and continue to appeal for information, no matter how minor it might seem. In particular, we want to hear from anyone who was near the Millennium footbridge in Bute Park between midnight and 1:20am on July 20.”
