Life Sentence for Child Rapist Steven Sutton
Steven Sutton, from Redcatch Road, Knowle, has been handed a life sentence at Bristol Crown Court after pleading guilty to 30 offences, including five counts of raping a child. He must serve a minimum of 13 years before he can apply for parole and has been slapped with a lifelong Sexual Harm Prevention Order.
Grotesque Abuse Uncovered on Sutton’s Devices
The court heard how Sutton groomed, abused, and raped a young girl between July 2021 and March 2022. He even filmed the assaults, storing the vile footage on his phone and computers. Sutton threatened the victim to keep her silent.
Initially investigated for downloading indecent child images, police seized Sutton’s electronics and uncovered the full scale of his horrific crimes. He was arrested and charged with rape and making indecent images, with additional charges piling up as officers combed through his devices.
Victim’s Family Speak Out: “He’s a Monster”
“When the officers told me, the words felt surreal. I was numb. Life will never be the same again, and it feels overwhelming,” said the victim’s mother.
“My child will never be care-free or running wild again. With years of support, we might heal. I will do everything to make sure she is okay, but it should never have happened.”
“He has destroyed my family. He broke us all in different ways. He changed her life and future, leaving trauma that will scar her forever.”
“He’s a danger to any child and society. He doesn’t deserve freedom. But he won’t break us forever. We will get stronger; we will get better.”
Police and CPS Praise Victim’s Courage & Pledge Justice
PC Rosie Murrell and DC Fiona Currey from the Internet Child Abuse Team described Sutton’s crimes as “shocking, disturbing and upsetting,” warning he poses a “real and significant risk” to children. They confirmed the community is safer with him behind bars.
They praised the victim and her family for their “incredible courage” throughout the investigation, saying no sentence can undo the damage but hoping the harsh punishment brings some closure.
Gemma Kneebone, Senior Crown Prosecutor for the CPS South West Rape and Serious Sexual Offences Unit, said:
“This is a shocking case of sexual abuse against a young child. Working closely with Avon and Somerset Police, we charged Sutton with 30 offences reflecting the seriousness of his crimes. His guilty plea spared the victim and family the ordeal of a trial.”
“Operation Soteria aims to improve rape investigations and prosecutions, increasing justice for victims.”
Senior Investigating Officer DI Adam Knee praised the resilience and professionalism of the officers involved in this grim investigation.
His Honour Judge Peter Blair also commended police for their outstanding work, especially PC Murrell and DC Currey.
